■THE SHUONAN IKKYUJI TEMPLE
 
founded by Ikkyu-zenji(sojyun1394-1481)
 
THE SHUONAN IKKYUJI TEMPLE was inaugurated
at its the present site as a Zen monastery
and was given its name,Myoushouji Temple,
by Daio-kokushi(alias Nampo Jyomyo), a high priest
of the zen sect,upon hisreturn from T'ang(China)
where he had studied the doctrines of Zen
as a disciple to Kidou-osho,a celebrated bonze of the time.
 
The Myoshoji Temple was destroyed in the war during the year
of Genko(1331),and remained in ruins until it was restored
in the second year of Kosei(1456)by Ikkyuu-zenji,the six chief
abbot to the Daitokuji branche of the Rinzai Zen sect. he named
the temple the Shuonan and dedicated it as a memorial to the founder.
Ikkyu-zenji lived the rest of his life in this temple,and commuted
to the Daitokuji Temple in Kyoto,to which he was appointed
chief abbot at the age of 81.he passed away on november 21
in thirteenth year of Bummei(1481),at 88,and was buried
in the mausoleum annexed to this temple. 
 
 
 
To reach the temple get off at the Shintanabe Station
on the Kintesu Kyoto Line or at the Kyotanabe Station on the
JR Gakkentoshi Line.

□ROCK GARDENS 
 
ROCK GARDENS,designted spots of scenic beauty.
The HOJO garden is typical zen-style rock garden from early Edo period,attributed to
three distinguished designers of the time,shokado, sagawada kiroku and ishikawa jozan.
 
 
 
□THE WOODEN STATUE OF IKKYU-ZENJI
 
the wooden statue of IKKYU-ZENJI(Ikkyu,the great Zen master,1394-1481),
seated in the chair in the sanctum of HOJO(the Abbot's Chember),designated
important cultural property,was constructed by his disciple Bokusai-zenji
at his instruction in the year of his demise in 1481.
the hair on the scalp and the mustache on the face of the statue were implanted
from those of ikkyu's own body
 
 
 
□HOJO
 
HOJO(the Abbot Chamber),designated important cultural property,was restored
and dedicated in the third year of Keian(1650)by Maeda Toshitune(1593-1658),
feudal load of the province of kaga(ishikawa prefecture).
The paintings on the interior sliding doors are the works of Kano Tanyusai Morinobu
(1453-1490),the founder of the Kano school of painting in the early Edo period.
 
 
□IKKYUJI NATTO
 
IKKYUJI NATTO(fermented beans),a special product of this temple,
is made from selected beans with the recipe handed down by Ikkyu-zenji.
Its fragrant and subtle delicacies will appeal to everyone's taste.
 
 
 
 
We may lose a mountain behind Ikkyuji Temple by land development.
